Kolkata Knight Riders Squad: Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, Chris Lynn, Dinesh Karthik(c), Robin Uthappa, Mitchell Johnson, Piyush Chawla, Kuldeep Yadav, Shubman Gill, Ishank Jaggi, Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Nitish Rana, Vinay Kumar, Apoorv Wankhade, Rinku Singh, Shivam Mavi, Cameron Delport, Javon Searles, Tom Curran
Death bowling was once again Royal Challengers Bangalore’s big problem in their defeat to Chennai Super Kings last time out. Corey Anderson was the man to concede the winning runs, and having been hit for 58 – including six sixes – it is hard to see the New Zealander retaining his place, particularly with his batting below par too.
If Anderson is dropped for the game against Kolkata, it could mean an immediate return for England all-rounder Chris Woakes, who was dropped for Colin de Grandhomme last time out. Brendan McCullum is another waiting in the wings, but with Quinton de Kock and AB de Villiers hitting half-centuries last time out, and Virat Kohli one of the world’s best, the batting is not RCB’s issue. Kohli is likely to open again after Manan Vohra was dropped last time out.
On the back of two superb innings, AB de Villiers has clearly found his form at a key time – the South African followed up his 39-ball 90 not out by smashing 68 off 30 balls last time out. Those knocks mean he now has 280 runs to his name – just three behind current orange cap leader Ambati Rayadu. Captain Virat Kohli has now scored 249 in this year’s competition meanwhile, though it was his opening partner Quinton de Kock who outshone him against Chennai with four sixes in his 37-ball 53. Bowling has been less successful, but Yuzvendra Chahal has picked up four wickets in his last two matches.
Royal Challengers Bangalore have won just two of their six opening games following their five-wicket defeat against Chennai Super Kings last time out. The Super Kings’ 207/5 was the third time Bangalore had conceded more than 200 so far, with Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians also claiming big wins against the Royal Challengers. They won their previous game against Delhi Daredevils, with AB de Villiers blasting them towards their 175-run target, but their only other win prior to that was at home to Kings XI Punjab.
Kolkata’s bowlers have come in for some serious punishment in their last two matches, and Jacques Kallis may consider changing his side’s attack to face the Royal Challengers. Teenager Shivam Mavi conceded 58 runs last time out, having been hit for 40 in the defeat to Rajasthan Royals too. If Mavi misses out, it could mean a return for Vinay Kumar, who has not played since his disastrous last over against Chennai Super Kings – he took 2/30 against the Royal Challengers in the match before that one. Tom Curran is another option, but his return would mean one of Chris Lynn, Andre Russell, Sunil Narine or Mitchell Johnson having to miss out.
Captain Dinesh Karthik has been Kolkata Knight Riders’ top scorer so far this campaign, with 212 in seven innings despite not yet passing 50. Andre Russell has a high score of 88 not out, against Chennai Super Kings, and he too has gone past 200 for the season. Sunil Narine has been inconsistent, but a return to his best bowling of 3/18 against the Delhi Daredevils would be welcome. The West Indian hit 26 opening the batting last time out too and scored 50 last time these two teams met. Chris Lynn and Robin Uthappa have also been inconsistent with the bat, but Lynn hit 74 against Kings XI Punjab and Uthappa’s failure against Delhi last time out ended a run of three consecutive scores above 30.
Kolkata Knight Riders have won three and lost four of their seven games so far, suffering two heavy defeats in their most recent two games. A rain-affected match against Kings XI Punjab saw them lose by nine wickets with 11 balls to spare, while last time out they conceded 219/4 in a 55-run defeat to Delhi Daredevils. It has proved to be an abrupt end to Kolkata’s recent return to form, which had previously seen them earning relatively comfortable wins against Delhi and Rajasthan Royals in back-to-back games.
