Mumbai Indians Squad: Rohit Sharma(c), Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard, Mustafizur Rahman, Pat Cummins, Suryakumar Yadav, Krunal Pandya, Ishan Kishan, Rahul Chahar, Evin Lewis, Saurabh Tiwary, Ben Cutting, Pradeep Sangwan, Jean-Paul Duminy, Tajinder Singh, Sharad Lumba, Siddhesh Lad, Aditya Tare, Mayank Markande, Akila Dananjaya, Anukul Roy, Mohsin Khan, MD Nidheesh, Mitchell McClenaghan
South Africa captain Faf du Plessis missed out against Royal Challengers Bangalore as Imran Tahir was restored to the starting line-up and picked up two wickets. England’s Sam Billings fell early again in that game, however – he has scored just 21 runs in three innings since his half-century against Kolkata Knight Riders – and Du Plessis could return in his place. South African paceman Lungi Ngidi remains unavailable after returning home for family reasons. England all-rounder David Willey is still waiting for his first appearance, meanwhile, having flown out as a late replacement for the injured Kedar Jadhav.
Ambati Rayadu has been in scorching batting form in his last two matches, blitzing 79 from 37 balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad before following that up with a 53-ball 82 in the win against Royal Challengers Bangalore last time out. Captain MS Dhoni was also back to his best in the latter match, smashing seven sixes as he hit 70 not out from 34 balls to lead Chennai to victory. The Super Kings’ strength, however, has been in the breadth of talent on display – Shane Watson scored a century in their previous match in Pune, Dwayne Bravo was man of the match when they beat Mumbai in the first game and this is all without considering the obvious talents of Suresh Raina.
Chennai’s one-wicket win against Mumbai Indians in the first game has set the tone for some thrilling games since. They beat Kolkata with one ball to spare in the following game, before falling four runs short against Kings XI Punjab. Since then, they have thrashed Rajasthan Royals, defended 182/3 to beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by just four runs, and then enjoyed another last-over success when they chased 205 to beat Royal Challengers Bangalore last time out. Chennai Super Kings have passed 200 in three of their six matches.
Mumbai Indians have been unchanged for their last three matches but must surely be considering changes after another defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad last time out. Mumbai’s biggest issues have been their death bowling and their batting, with New Zealander Adam Milne – flown over as a replacement for injured Pat Cummins – one option to fix the first issue. Batting wise, Saurabh Tiwary is among the batsmen waiting in the wings. Australian all-rounder Ben Cutting is another possible option, which could mean one of the West Indian duo of Evin Lewis and Kieron Pollard making way as Mumbai look to better balance their overseas contingent.
For all their disappointment so far, batsman Suryakamur Yadav has at least been in good form. Ironically the only game he hasn’t scored well in (or scored at all for that matter) was the win against Royal Challengers Bangalore. In the other five games he has passed 50 twice, and scored 230 runs in total. Rohit Sharma hit 94 in the win against Royal Challengers Bangalore, and a mark of his importance has been the fact that Mumbai have failed to win any of the other five games, in which Sharma has not scored more than 18. Mumbai are still waiting to see the best of big-hitting Evin Lewis too, who has scored just one half-century so far. With the ball, Mayank Markande has been in superb form however – he has taken ten wickets to lead the bowling charts so far, at an average of 14.3 and an impressive economy rate of 7.15. On average, Markande has taken a wicket every two overs so far. He has been backed up by Hardik Pandya and Mustafizur Rahman, who both have seven wickets apiece.
In a game of fine margins, Mumbai Indians have lost five of their opening six games but it could have been so very different. They lost their first match to Chennai Super Kings by one wicket with one ball remaining, then went even closer against Sunrisers Hyderabad, who won by one wicket off the last ball of the game. Next up, Delhi Daredevils beat them from the last ball of the game, despite Mumbai posting 194/6 from their 20 overs, before they finally earned a win – 213/6 proving 46 runs too much for Royal Challengers Bangalore to chase down. They could not follow that victory up, however, losing in the last over against Rajasthan Royals before a low-scoring defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad in their most recent game at the Wankhede Stadium. The home team were dismissed for 87, chasing just 119 to win.

Chennai Super Kings are in superb form, and Mumbai Indians- despite going close so many times – are simply not. Given both teams’ results so far, this could be another close one, but back Mumbai Indians to win this match, be it in dramatic circumstances or a little more comfortably this time.
